Comments on your critique of Fr. Reardon’s homily on Justification. I wish I knew who I was writing to - I found no name on your website.
I grew up as a Lutheran, was baptized, and confirmed. Yet I left the Lutheran church as a adult as I noticed the faith of my fathers being stripped and trampled on by the current post-modern Lutheran church. Today’s Lutheran church is not your grandfather’s Lutheran church as Ringo might say. It certainly is no longer represents the Faith and Traditions as handed down by the Apostles. These comments are not meant to demean. They are meant only as a witness to my experience and desire to worship Jesus and hold to the faith I was taught and believe. I have come to see the Protestant traditions as one might see Swiss cheese - a great base yet full of holes. I have found the fullness of the faith in Orthodoxy, where all aspects of the Faith are taught and practiced. Where the fullness of the faith and apostolic Tradition are fearlessly defended, and not ignored. I had to laugh when I heard you say the Fr. Reardon did not mention the Cross. I know Fr. Reardon, and I have never heard any thing so silly. He is the most Christ centered man I have ever met. I have heard him preach on Christ crucified more than all the Lutheran pastors I grew up with put together. I will not argue with you about your specific criticisms, Fr. Reardon needs no defense, least of all from me. Yet, I will point out that you seem to think that if you are dealt a royal flush in poker you cannot lose. Holding, and not throwing your hand away, is a decision that is within you, and something you need a lifetime to grow into making the right decisions, and learning to live Christ-like lives. I really do not think you listened very carefully to Fr. Reardon. Leave your non-Biblical “Sola-” doctrines behind, and listen again. Paul consistently talks in Romans and Corinthians about Being Saved (past), Being Saved (present), and Being Saved (future). Be careful what you discard, and forgive my brief and abrupt comments.

    Regards, Steve

    Steve,
I run this blog, Brian Yamabe, which simply replays old episodes of Issues, Etc. a show that was associated with the LCMS until it was recently cancelled. I by no means am attempting to run this site anonymously, I’m just not a major focus because I’m just reposting stuff. The comments are from an LCMS pastor named Todd Wilken. So you are not directly speaking to him, but let me address your concerns as best that an LCMS layman can.

I don’t know which denomination of Lutheran you grew up in, obviously some are farther outside what I would consider confessional Lutheranism and even within the more confessional denominations things can differ from congregation to congregation.

As for your specific comments about Fr. Reardon,
    1) I have never heard any other sermons by Fr. Reardon, but this one did fail to mention the Cross. This was not a criticism of Fr. Reardon, it was a critique of this specific sermon.

    2) We would agree then that you could throw your royal flush away, further we would add that you were given that hand by God for the sake of Christ. We would disagree that this is the result of some “right decision” on our part. We believe we are declared righteous because of Christ, my understanding is that others believe they are made righteous because of Christ. As Pastor Wilken pointed out this has people looking at themselves and taking their eyes off of Christ.

    3) As far as “non-Biblical ‘Sola-’” doctrines, we simply ask you to look at Ephesians 2: 8-9. If you wish to look for some other reason for you faith that is fine, but we find no comfort when we look to anything but Christ and God’s word.
